Evaluation of my college magazine

For my media preliminary exercise we had to create a front cover of a college magazine and a mock up contents page for the magazine aswell. I used one main image on the front cover of my magzine, this was a picture of a student at wyke that is in the college netball team. I though very carefully about the way the photo was taken, she was wearing the netball kit which is purple so i stood her on a white background, and placed her to the right of the photo. This allowed me to put text above her head and also to the left of the photo. I did the writing on the front cover in purple and black to stand out against the white background but also i kept the purple colour scheme going. My magazine is aim at students at wyke aged between 16 and 19, and is for both male and females. I thought the way my front cover was produced represented a happy and positive image to Wyke College.
Over all i thought, that my magazine WSC "Wyke Sixth form college" was effective and sent out all the messages which i would of liked it too.

analysis of another college magazine

I have found a college magazine called vibe the magazine looks like it has been made by a student because it doesn’t really look professionally done. The magazine I have found looks American, I think this because of the girl on the front cover.

The masthead on this magazine really stands out on the back ground. The background is red and the writing is red, white and yellow. These are a good choice of colours by the creator because it makes the magazine easy to read and also stands out. The photo on the front cover looks like it has been taken by the maker of the magazine and just put on to the cover. It doesn’t seem like much thought has gone into taking this photo although it does stand out a lot and it’s a good idea that the picture isn’t all over the back ground its just on the right side. Because of the picture only been on the right side of the cover this allows text to be on its own and not over lap the photo. Another disadvantage of this magazine is that in the top right corner they is a little splodge of red which looks like they wanted to cover a bit of the masthead with text, but it is not very neatly done.  The contents of the magazine I thought was good by flowing with the same colour scheme it makes the reader feel like the magazine was well thought of and it shows that they are both apart of the same magazine. The institution of this magazine would be the college which the magazine vibe has being created.

I feel that the ideology of this college magazine would be to show the rest of the college that students are doing well, because of the main story on the cover which is STUDENT OF THE MONTH- JADE HYLTON. Using the girls name on the cover shows that they would like to show her off and are very proud of her.The audience of this magazine would be people aged 16 to 19 years old because these would be the majority of ages of students at this college also the girl on the front of the cover only looks young. I feel like the magazine is only targeting women because they isn’t anything to do with men on the cover or in the contents page. This isn’t a very good idea for the college. The images on the front of the magazine shows a positive representation towards the college. The young girl is wearing sensible clothing and has her hair nicely done, although she does have bright red lipstick on which could show different connotations to the young girl, because red lipstick is stereotypically used to attract men.

I have found another college magazine, this one is called The college issue. This magazine looks professionally done although it could be a students work and really stands out. It was published in New York, you can tell this because at the top of the magazine it says the new York times magazine.

The masthead of this magazine is in the centre, the publisher of this magazine has chose to put the masthead in black writing and its on a light blue and light pick back ground. The whole of the magazine is different colours because its like one big collage, but they have chose to do the light colours behind the masthead so that it stands out. I think that doing a collage was a good idea, it is very striking which attracts people to the magazine. Where the magazine has text on the front its on a yellow back ground with black writing this is also good and stands out. A disadvantage of this front cover is that it looks a bit messy and a bit all over and some things on the front are hard to see. They is no specification to what the institution of this magazine would be, but we do know that it’s a college magazine and it is from New York.

The ideology of this magazine could be to show teachers and other students pupils work if it is done by a pupil, this is also not very clear because we don’t know who has made the magazine.

The audience of the magazine would be students of this college which will be aged between 16 and 19. The magazine could also be targeted at teacher and also pupils that might be wanting to come to this college in the future. I feel the magazine could be aimed at men and women because they isn’t a specific colour scheme that would target men or women also they isn’t any pictures that would be aimed more to females or males. This magazine has a positive representation towards this college. The images that you can see on the back ground are of people playing games such as basketball and then they is a young girl on the back ground I would say she was about 16-17 years old.

Over all I think that they magazine is good, and representative of the college.

Preliminary Excercise

I have been asked to make a front cover and a contents page for a college magazine for the Preliminary Exercise. For my College magazine I have to originate everything, from all the photos going on to my magazine to the way the magazine is laid out. I am going to find two other college magazines and analyse them both stating the bad points and the good points of the magazine.

When doing my college magazine I will have to think about language, institution, ideology and representation. I would think about the language by the type of photographs I would want on my magazine and how I would collect all my photos. I would also have to think about the text on my magazine and make sure it stands out against the background on my contents page and my photo that will be on the front cover.
The institution of my college magazine is Wyke College, at Wyke there are 1300 students and are all aged between 16 and 19. 69% of the students at wyke are female. This links on to the audience of my magazine even though there is netball on the front cover it is not just a sports magazine it is aim at everybody at Wyke College. 
The ideology of my magazine will cover, respect, values and behaviour of Wyke and also the expectations that’s Wyke College have of their students. I will do this by showing positive images in my magazine and make sure the language respects everyone. This would also join in too representation, with the title and the photos which will represent the institution in a positive way.
